This Privacy Policy explains what information the TripSplit mobile application ("TripSplit", "the app", "we", "us", or "our") collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using TripSplit you agree to the practices described here.
TripSplit is a group travel-expense tracker. You create trips, add members, record shared expenses, and the app calculates who owes whom. TripSplit is free to use and is supported by advertising.
1. Information We Collect
a. Account information (Firebase Authentication)
To sign in you use either Google Sign-In or a passwordless email sign-in link. Through Google Firebase Authentication we receive and store:
- Your email address.
- Your display name (from your Google account, or derived from your email address).
- A Firebase user identifier (UID) used to associate you with your trips.
We do not receive or store your Google password. Authentication is handled entirely by Google Firebase.
b. Trip and expense data you enter (Cloud Firestore)
Content you create in the app is stored in Google Cloud Firestore so it can sync across devices and between the members of a trip. This includes:
- Trip details: title, optional destination, currency, dates, and a cover emoji.
- Member details: the names and email addresses you add for trip members (including people you invite by email who may not yet have an account).
- Expenses: title, amount, category, who paid, how the cost is split, the date, and any notes.
- Settlements: amounts, who paid whom, payment method, and notes.
- An activity log of changes made within a trip (e.g. "Alex added an expense").
c. Advertising and device data (Google AdMob)
TripSplit displays ads through Google AdMob. To serve and measure ads, AdMob and Google may collect:
- Your device's advertising identifier (Advertising ID).
- Approximate, non-precise information such as general device type and diagnostics used for ad delivery and fraud prevention.
This collection is performed by Google's advertising SDK. See Google's own policy at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.
d. Data we do NOT collect
- We do not request or access your location, contacts, photos, microphone, or camera.
- The app requests only the Internet and network state permissions.
- TripSplit does not include a separate analytics product such as Firebase Analytics, and contains no in-app purchases or payment processing.
2. How We Use Your Information
| Data | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Email, name, user ID | To sign you in, identify you within trips, and link you to trips you were invited to by email. |
| Trip, member, expense, and settlement data | To provide the core app function: calculate fair shares, net balances, and minimal settlements, and to sync this data among members of a trip. |
| Member email addresses | To invite people to a trip and grant them access when they sign in with that email. |
| Advertising ID and device/diagnostic data | To display and measure advertising through Google AdMob. |
3. How Your Data Is Shared
With other members of your trips. Trip, expense, member, and settlement data is visible to the other people who are members of the same trip. Only sign in and add data for trips you intend to share with those people.
With our service providers. We use Google Firebase (Authentication and Cloud Firestore) to store and sync your data, and Google AdMob to serve ads. These providers process data on our behalf and/or as independent controllers of advertising data:
- Google Firebase — firebase.google.com/support/privacy
- Google AdMob / Google Ads — policies.google.com/technologies/ads
- Google Privacy Policy — policies.google.com/privacy
We do not sell your personal information. We share the advertising identifier with Google for the advertising purposes described above.
4. Data Security
Data transmitted between the app and our providers is encrypted in transit using industry-standard TLS/HTTPS. Stored data is protected by Google Firebase's security infrastructure and by Firestore security rules that restrict access to the members of each trip. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
5. Data Retention
We retain your account information and trip data for as long as your account exists or as needed to provide the service. You can remove data at any time:
- Delete individual expenses or settlements from within a trip.
- Delete an entire trip (its creator can delete the trip and all of its expenses and settlements for everyone).
To request deletion of your account and all associated personal data, contact us at the email below and we will process your request. Advertising data collected by Google is retained according to Google's own retention policies.
6. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to data portability. You can exercise these rights by using the in-app deletion options above or by contacting us. You can also reset your Advertising ID or opt out of ad personalization in your device's system settings.
7. Children's Privacy
TripSplit is not directed to children under the age of 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
8. International Users
Your information may be processed and stored on Google's servers, which may be located in countries other than your own. By using TripSplit you consent to this transfer, subject to the protections described in this policy.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
